5 Essential Mobile Apps UI Design Tips for Entrepreneurs

June 27, 2023 | Mobile Optimization

A mobile app is more than replicating your website just for the sake that others are doing it too. Enough of following the crowd. It is time now to follow the statistics. And stats say that more than 80% of the online purchase is done via mobile. This sums up the need to go mobile with your brand. But keep in mind that a mobile app is the representation of your brand. And UI Design is one thing you need to be very specific about.

While many people think that UI Design just focuses on layout and functionality of interfaces, it is actually a subset of user experience design, which focuses on the big picture: that is, the whole experience, not just the design interface. A good way to start is to beta test your mobile app right before you put it in public.

Here I would like to lay down some tips that can guide the young Entrepreneurs to head start their Entrepreneurship journey.

1. Know your users

This might seem like a cliché but in reality, it is one of the founding stones for your success. As an Entrepreneur, you need to figure out the personality traits of your target market and embed them in your app. Study Psychology of colors and use colors that get clicks from users.

Secondly, know your company goals. What is the purpose of your mobile app? Is it to generate more traffic or to generate leads? Don’t ever stop digging what your user wants and pivot the necessary changes. If you are able to pin point the users’ needs, you will be able to fulfill those needs with your app.

Analyze the data of your users and infuse the outcome in your mobile app design to get better ROI.

2. Think carefully about the size and placement of elements

The beauty of the mobile app is that you can focus on elements that you want your user to click. If you make a bigger call to action buttons you’ll surely convert more leads. Make sure to enhance the size of call-to-action buttons. Bigger buttons will be easy to spot and click.

Separate the navigation buttons with your call-to-action buttons. The best approach is to place your navigation buttons on the edges or corners of the screen. This makes the user certain that these are navigation buttons. And users don’t need to worry about overshooting their click target.

While going for navigation, always keep the model in mind. Do you want horizontal scrolling or vertical navigation? What are the benefits of both and how will they help your users?

3. Don’t force your users to think

Before you even lay down your design, decide how will your users interact with the app?

At times when a user visits a website or an app, what they are looking for is a solution. For instance, if the user is looking for a gift delivery service. Make sure when he lands on your page, he finds the best deals on the landing page. Keep the sign up as simple as possible. And make a hierarchy of steps that will help the user to proceed further with the order. From a developer point of view, keeping things simple will make it easier to do quick edits in the app.

Are the users using your product directly (interacting with an element of the product) or indirectly (interacting with an element external to the product).

Direct interactions might include:

  1. Tapping a button
  2. Dragging items with fingertip
  3. Swapping a card

While indirect interactions include:

  1. Filling a form filed
  2. Using a direct command or a shortcut
  3. Typing into a form field

Sometimes, the interaction might seem easy. But in every case make sure that your user doesn’t have to think too much.

4. Welcome Mistakes

To err is human; to forgive, divine.

This is the same reason why Google doesn’t care about hiring top college graduates? At Google, they focus more on fixing the mistake rather than preventing them. Because when you do mistakes it opens windows of opportunities.

Sometimes you just have to let the accidents happen. Anticipate the error. And add some humor to cover up your mistake.

Mistakes help us grow. When you launch the first version of your app, there will be mistakes and you might or might not be able to point them out. But your developer needs to figure out if something is wrong with the app and correct that mistake.

Instead of conventional ways to lay out the mistake, try this:

E.g., “You said you were born on Mars, which humans haven’t colonized. Yet.”

Explain how to fix it. E.g., “Please enter a birthplace here on Earth.”

This might seem naive for now, but once you develop the trust, people will appreciate your humor and let it go.

5. Appreciate feedback

In the real world, feedback helps us grow. We speak and others respond. Although it is difficult to get much feedback but you still need to listen to people and make the necessary changes. Feedback will help you to stay ahead of your competition.  With the right feedback your app will get better and better.

If the page loads in 5 seconds, do not display the progress bar. As it might seem longer to load. In fact, mobile app development agencies are adopting the feedback loop and making good use of it. It is always good to ask the customers how they feel about your product and make the changes they feel important.

So, folks, there are some tips that can help you to jump-start your mobile app in a productive way. What are your best UI mobile app designs? Feel free to share so everyone else can learn from it.
