Stuart Pollington has been working in the SEO industry for years now. He started as a retail director in 2004 till 2009.
He has also worked as CTO for many firms and currently owns Smart Traffic and Smart Digital.

Please tell us about yourself, where you work and your role at your company.

My name’s Stuart Pollington and I am the owner/MD of Smart Traffic in Australia and Smart Digital in Thailand.

How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?

I started working for a website selling laptops and computers online in the mid 2,000’s. It was a student-focused website selling low cost refurbished laptops and PC’s as well as OEM laptop batteries in the UK.

It had unbelievable rankings for really competitive keywords and ranked number 1 in Google UK for terms like ‘cheap laptops’, ‘cheap laptop batteries’, ‘cheap computers’ etc.

I learnt from the owners all about SEO and how to compete against the bigger brands on a smaller budget.

When they decided to launch an SEO Company offering the same results to clients, it was a natural progression for me to move over and work with them.

How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years? And, how do you think year 2019 will shape up for SEO industry?

I still see the core basis of SEO as the same as it has been for the last 10 years, which is that you focus on the 3 pillars.

These are Onsite (sorting out any technical issues holding the site back), Content (building up the relevancy and authority of the website/brand) and Offsite (earning links from relevant websites to increase your visibility in the search engines).

Sure, there are lots of other terminology, strategies and tactics etc but they still come under one of these 3 core pillars.

For 2019, I see the ongoing trend for businesses to understand the real impact Local online visibility can have for their businesses and take action.

With the updates and improvements to Google My Business over the last year it will make it even easier for the SME’s to get a grip with their online marketing.

What are the services you provide to your clients and what do you think makes your business stand out among your competitors?

SEO is our real strength and we deliver directly to businesses in Australia, New Zealand and Thailand as well as White Labelling end-to-end SEO and our link building services to other Digital Marketing Agencies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.

We currently work on around 2,000 individual campaigns each month for companies across the world.

In addition to SEO, we also deliver ROI for our clients through Paid Search and Social Media creating a more holistic approach.

Everybody knows what you have achieved, I would like to talk about your failure stories and how they impacted your professional life. (As we know Rome was not built in a day)

Probably my biggest personal failure is trying to do too much myself. Whether that was because I thought it could not be done by someone else, or I was interested in doing it, you can’t grow a business that way and in the end, it is your clients that suffer.

You have to take the time to train people and trust them to take on the responsibilities. Sometimes they will make mistakes but that is part of the learning process.
