Please introduce yourself and where you work.

My name is Daniel Christensen. I started Morningdove Marketing for about a year and a half ago, focusing mostly on SEO, but have expanded slightly since then.

How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years?

The bottom seems to fall out of the SEO industry every couple years. SEO’s aren’t getting away with the same “treachery” as before, but those who have adapted will still always succeed. Google favors quality a lot more now. You can’t just put up a site or piece of content and expect it to perform. This creates a better internet for users, but a headache for SEO’s. Manipulation still occurs regularly, especially as Google tries to improve local algorithms, but not at the same scale. It’s all tactical now, and I actually prefer it this way. It keeps a few barriers to entry in place so that my service can shine above the others.

How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?

In 2013 I took a class on internet marketing in college, and I was hooked. I’ve built hundreds of sites and written thousands of posts since then. I’m still learning something new each day and improving my skills so I can provide amazing results for clients.

What are the services you provide to your clients?

Most clients who gravitate toward me are local businesses, so I handle their SEO primarily. The SEO company I worked for before I started my own specialized in local SEO, so I felt like I had a leg up in that arena. I’ve found that local businesses are more singular in their focus, and are therefore better long-term clients overall. It’s all about providing results, being personable, and managing expectations.

What strategy according to you will prevail in 2018 for SEO?

SEO’s will need to take a more holistic approach. For example, link-building can be done a thousand different ways, but integrating social promotion, creative content formation, and custom outreach will continue to work, and work well. I have a few ideas of my own that have resulted in big successes in this regard. If someone tells you there’s only one way to achieve a certain result, they’re wrong. Technical SEO still matters, but forward-thinking SEO’s have always come up with creative ways help their clients’ business shine.
Link-building will remain a ranking factor into the future, but watch guest posting decline in the next few years as mass posting continues as a means of manipulating search engines. Scoring great links is about creating value, relationships, and being creative. The sites that are easy to get links from usually aren’t worth as much.

What would your advice be to people who are looking to take up digital marketing as a career choice?

Learn something new every day. I am a blog junkie, and am still amazed at how much there is out there that I don’t know. At the beginning, you don’t know what you don’t know. Work for someone who a thought-leader in the industry and work on your own sites at the same time. Learn as you go. Pick a low-competition keyword and put the concepts you learn into practice. Reading blogs is a great start, but the best learning comes with the “doing”.
