Tell us about the time when you were seven or eight. Who/what did you want to be? Is it different from what you are doing now?
When I was around 7, 8 years old – I remember wanting to be a police officer. I don’t know why – I just recall wanting to become a policeman. But as I grew up, I found a real passion for drawing – it wasn’t until my early 20’s that I realised I could actually make money from being a designer. Keep in mind, it’s the late 90’s – I didn’t get my first computer (imac) until I was around 23 years old.. Since getting my diploma in design, I haven’t looked back.
How do you think digital marketing, more specifically SEO has changed over the last 10 years?
The changing landscape in SEO over the last 10 years has been massive. I remember when it used to be all about keywords and backlinks, yes those areas and strategies are still relevant today, but these days a strong SEO strategy should be based around user experience and not only focusing on driving the traffic to your site but actually having the user stay on your site for a longer customer/buyer experience. Let’s face it, if people are enjoying the content of your website and hanging around longer – Google will start seeing your site as an authority within that space. So the overall user experience has never been so important to push through the clutter of uninspiring websites built for search engines, not the end user.
The state of regular Google and Facebook updates are uncertain and challenging right now, how are you and your team managing through it?
Just when you get the handle of one algorithm update, along comes another one. We at Lethal are constantly educating ourselves on new tips and strategies to remain up-to-date with the latest techniques to help benefit our clients SEO campaigns. As each day goes by we are still learning something new each day, the passion and drive to offer the best digital solution for our clients keeps us going!
Everybody knows what you have achieved, I would like to talk about your failure stories and how they impacted your professional life. (as we know Rome wasn’t built in a day)
Hmm, this is a bit of a hard one, I can’t recall an actual ‘failure story’ that was directly related to a clients campaign or project, but I guess one major thing I have learned with being in business for over 16 years is that without the proper systems in place, your workflow and productivity will be impacted. Over the last few years, I have seen the ‘Lethal’ brand go to the next level, which has lead to a lot more enquiries, increase in conversions – which ultimately led to just being flooded with new projects. The only problem was, at the time – I didn’t have systems in place to handle such a massive increase in the workload. So even though at times I was on the back-foot, playing catch-up and trying to not drown in the workload, I was able to implement strategies and staff to manage the large volume of work. Now with systems in place, it’s safe to say Lethal is a well oiled digital machine 🙂
Who are some of the remarkable people you look up to within the industry who’ve made a memorable impact on you? (And how they have helped you stay up-to-date with what’s happening in the industry).
Apart from the inspirational leaders such as Gary Vee who I admire and look up to, I get a lot of inspiration and motivation from our clients. We work with startups, right through to established brands. So working closely with entrepreneurs on a daily basis really helps me push the boundaries in all things digital and marketing. End of the day, if I’m not being challenged or learning something new – I will soon fall behind the pack very quickly, which will also affect my clients’ success.
