July 17, 2023 | Interview

Please introduce yourself and where you work.

My name is Richard A. Barrett and I am the owner and Director of Search for All Things eCommerce.

How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years?

SEO has changed a lot over the past 10 years. When I first started in the SEO world, everything was sloppy and really didn’t have direction. Content wasn’t as important yet and links did not have to be quality links. You could build a website in a week and create 30K links and rank the site in less than a month. Google cared more about link quantity than quality. Now SEO is so much about relevant content, proper link building and even social media has become an important part of an SEO strategy.

How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?

I worked for a lead generation company during the housing crash in the mid-2000’s I was brought on as junior SEO/content creator. After about a year or two, I decided that I didn’t want to stay a junior SEO and I wanted to get more involved in the SEO process as well as become Adwords certified. So I studied for the Adwords test and passed it on my first attempt. I then became a mid-level SEO/SEM employee and found that I was really good at the lead generation process. I grasped fairly quickly the importance of clicks to conversions and started building landing pages for PPC that converted very well. From there I was given a team to lead that focused on conversion based SEO and SEM.

What are the services you provide to your clients?

We provide conversion based SEO for our clients. We also provide web design, app development, SEM services, Social Media and etc.

What strategy according to you will prevail in 2018 for SEO?

Hard question for sure! Google makes this hard for everyone. As soon as you think you figured out what Google is thinking, they throw a curveball in and switch up how the game is played. But lately, I have been seeing Google stay pretty consistent for now. I think Relevant content in search is what is going to help you out. Ranking a site is half of the game, but consolidating clicks, writing relevant content and ensuring content reflects the keywords in search is what is going to prevail in 2018. I also think quality links will also continue to help a website rank. Social Media usage will also continue to play a huge part in your plan. You need social media and you need to learn how to incorporate a content driven social media plan into your SEO plan.

What would your advice be to people who are looking to take up digital marketing as a career choice?

This is a saturated market. You really don’t need a degree from some big university to do this job (at times you don’t need a degree at all) if you are looking at this field as a career, be ready for hard times. It’s saturated and filled with online scammers and people looking for a constant deal. You need to find ways to stand out above the rest. You need to lead by example. Do you have a website that is ranked for your own keywords. How is the content on your site. Create an SEO strategy that practices what it preaches. If your website is ranked for your own keywords, it makes it easier to sell this to a client or even to get a job with a firm. I can’t tell you how many employees I interview who claim to have an amazing strategy or know seo very well and then can’t practice it on a site they own. Clients or leads want to see that you can rank a site for yourself. If you can do this or can show substantial growth for your site, it will make it so much easier to prove to a potential client that you can do the same for them. Create a social media plan for yourself and enact it. Create a content plan for yourself and put it to use. Build a portfolio for your own site and use it as a springboard to get your first client. If this seems like too much work, then choose another industry.
