Sean Van Guilder has been helping businesses get found on the internet for over 20 years. He has a 10,000 foot view of digital marketing that helps shed light on SEO as a business driver. Sean has worn almost every digital marketing hat out there and brings strategies and tactics that have knocked the socks off of companies such as Microsoft, MSN and WONGDOODY, to name a few. Currently, Sean is leading the SEO Practice for premier digital marketing agency, Point It, in Seattle. Sean is a self-taught digital marketer and loves every minute of it.

How do you think SEO has changed over the last 10 years?


The largest change we’ve seen is the move away from keyword rankings being the golden ticket for ranking and where it is now for user intent focused. Companies and SEO agencies that rely on keyword ranking are going to miss out on a number of opportunities for revenue and connecting with their customers if they don’t focus their content and assisting searchers with achieving their tasks and goals.

How did you get introduced to digital marketing, more specifically SEO?


I started out as a web developer in 1993 and was around for the advent of search engines. Being naturally curious I started looking at how my company at the time could rank better in engines pre-Google and then eventually Google. SEO is a perfect blend of technical and creative.

What are the services you provide to your clients?


We provide a full-range of Digital Marketing services: SEO, PPC, Digital Marketing and Paid Social.

What strategy according to you will prevail in 2017 for SEO?


Content Marketing paired with SEO. With the rise in mobile first searches, personal assistants and Artificial Intelligence, a company’s content has to be that much better and promoted through various channels even more than it used to be.

What would your advice be to people who are looking to take up digital marketing as a career choice?


Understand all the channels. Each one compliments the other in one way or another but also bridges the gaps where some can’t perform as well.
